PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS VS. VIDEO NEWS RELEASES
*** The production values and talent costs are much higher in PSAs (higher
talent costs, often shot in motion picture film, large crews) than in news
(video, shot with small crews) because the competition for free air time is
intense.
*** News is only broadcast during the news and even "evergreen" stories have
a short shelf life. PSAs are aired all through the day and night in unused
commercial time slots, and are often kept in station rotations for several
months.
*** Unlike most VNRs, PSAs allow the sponsor to identify themselves.
*** News stories may be reedited or just the visuals used, while PSAs are
aired as produced.
*** News Stories range from 1.5 to 2 minutes long, while PSAs are produced
in lengths of 60, 30, 20, 15, or 10 seconds.
